"Girly Glam Vibe" Painted Mid Century Modern Highboy Dresser

Early last month, I posted pics of the vintage  MCM American of Martinsville dresser set that I purchased from the thrift store. I decided to break up the set and paint them 2 totally different colors. Since the two pieces are so big, it made more sense to try and resell them separately. The 1st piece that I chose to tackle was the highboy dresser. This 6-drawer highboy is solid wood w/ dovetail drawer construction and very sturdy. There were a few dings and scratches but that was to be expected due to the age of the piece. There are also removable wood dividers in all of the drawers. These are the BEFORE pics of the highboy: Before_1_MCM Highboy Dresser on astralriles.com Before_2_MCM Highboy Dresser on astralriles.com Before_3_MCM Highboy Dresser on astralriles.com Before_4_MCM Highboy Dresser on astralriles.com Before_5_MCM Highboy Dresser on astralriles.com Before_6_MCM Highboy Dresser on astralriles.com There are few few scratches...but nothing a little sanding won't fix! Before_7_MCM Highboy Dresser on astralriles.com Before_8_MCM Highboy Dresser on astralriles.com STEP 1: Prep The 1st thing I did was remove all of the drawers and clean out the insides. When removing the drawers from old dressers like this, be sure to number them to ensure that they are put back in the same spot. Even though they appear to be the same sizes, they might not fit if you try to put them back in a different slot. Prep 1 - MCM Highboy Dresser on astralriles.com Next, I used an orbital sander with 120-grit sand (Fine) paper to lightly sand the wood surface of the dresser and the drawers, paying very close special attention to any knicks or imperfections. Prep 2 - MCM Highboy Dresser on astralriles.com STEP 2: Apply Primer Next, I wiped the pieces down, making sure there were no dust particles left. Then, I applied 1 coat of Zinsser primer. STEP 3: Spray Paint Drawer Handles As I indicated earlier, the wood drawer handles are actually part of the drawer and cannot be detached. I really wanted to make the handles appear as if they are a separate part of the drawer and to do something that would make them pop against the dresser's new paint color. I decided to spray paint the handles using Rustoleum's Gold Metallic Specialty Paint. In order to accomplish this, I had to do a bit of extra prep. I taped of the areas surrounding the handles and covered any exposed parts of the drawer and spray painted the handles. Considering this, I wanted to do something very bright with a glam-ish vibe to it that would appeal to the girliest of girls! The paint color chosen is Behr Marquee "Hacienda Tile" in semi-gloss finish. This color is more like a coral / pink. STEP 4: Paint Dresser & Drawers After the drawer handles had been painted gold, I had to cover them up with tape to avoid getting the other paint on them. Once that was completed, I added 2 coats of the Behr Marquee "Hacienda Tile" color to the dresser and drawers. One key thing to remember is to do a light sanding in between each coat to ensure a smooth finish. I used an extra fine sanding sponge for that step.
