DIY Gun Rack Repurposed Into A Outdoor Planter

Hola! Check out this latest DIY upcycle project. I found this old wood gun rack at the thrift store. It was only $6 plus I got an additional 15% off that price. I actually stared at this thing for about 15 minutes before I decided to buy it. To be honest, I didn't even know what it was at first. Eventually, someone told me that it was a gun rack. I was like "Oooooooooohhhhhhhhh OK!!!" I had never really seen a gun rack before. All I knew is that I could probably re-purpose the item for another use. And since the price was right, I bought it! I could hang the rack on the fence for easy accessibility, as well as to add a nice bright pop of color to the backyard. PREP To prep the rack, I 1st removed those black felt pieces that were attached to little arms. Then I lightly sanded the wood. I used a thin drill bit to drill several small holes in the cubby part of the rack. Since I planned to use that part as a "planter" for my annuals, the tiny holes would serve as drainage for the water. I had to make sure that the holes were not too big because I didn't want the dirt to fall through. I wanted to be able to hang garden tools on the rack, so I purchased a piece of pegboard from The Home Depot. The board actually only comes in a 2'x4' piece, but I asked a sales associate to cut it down to the size that I needed. So that way, I didn't have to worry about trying to cut it myself. Plus that saved me some time too. I nailed the pegboard to the back of the gun rack with the white side facing front. Primer application - Repurposed Gun Rack on astralriles.com Once the primer was dry, I applied two coats of red spray paint in a satin finish. Then I used a lacquer spray paint as a sealer topcoat. END RESULT A beautiful bright pop of color for my backyard. This DIY upcycle not only adds decor to my backyard BUT it also adds function as well.
